This seems to be from a common misconception and may have gotten popular, as it is a simple calculation. 7:1 ratio is very easy to remember and loosely correlates to an average human lifespan as well at 10 years to 70 years for a human.
However the American Veterinary Medical association has broken it down as:
- The first 15 human years equal to 1 dog year.
- The second year is equal to 9 human years.
- After that each year of a dog’s life is roughly 5 human years
I’m sure after that, you realise why the 7:1 ratio has become popular! Much simpler and easier to calculate and remember. No need to write down and get the calculator out!
