How To Get Rid Of Dog Smell From Your Home?

Everyone loves having dogs in the house and would do anything for them. They are part of the family and a member of the house with their own space and belongings. However we do want to avoid making the house smell like a kennel! You may have guests over or the neighbour pop round and just generally for yourself you want to have fresh clean smell in your house.

You don’t want to become accustomed to the smell so here are some tips to help you get rid of the smell:

  • Cleaning the dog bed – You need to be cleaning the bed regularly every few days. Once a week is minimum as odors can be trapped in the fabric. It is best to have removable machine washable covers on the bed, so can easily take them off and throw in the washing machine. You can use Baking soda for the fabric part of the bed.
  • Odor Resistant Bed – You can buy odor resistant beds with special micro fibers. These will put of more of a resistance than standard dog beds with odors. Just make sure they are machine washable as you do not want to much work cleaning them.
  • Grooming your dog – Have your dog groomed regularly, as just with humans if they are not cleaned regularly they will start to smell. Each dog varies but most just need a bath once in a while, which will freshen them up.
  • Vacuuming – You need a powerful vacuum ideally one designed for dog hairs. Vacuum regularly in the places they sit and play, making sure you get all the hidden spots. For sofas take out the cushions and vacuum in all the gaps as much dirt can get trapped there.
  • Air purifier – Not a solution for the root causes but great way to eliminate the smell. Best if you need to freshen up the home in a hurry and will help eliminate all odors, not just dogs.
  • Baking soda – As mentioned above with dog beds you can leave out baking soda over fabrics or carpets and let it absorb the odors. Should leave it overnight and cleaning it up in the morning.
  • Enzymatic cleaners – You can get dog odor remover cleaners, usually in spray form. These target the particles causing odors, smells and stains. They usually work on a range of surfaces and great to clean up after the dog.
  • Vinegar – Apple cider vinegar is a great cleaner, just add it to your washing machine along with your usually power or soap. Really great for dog bed covers, cushion covers and other fabrics your dog comes in contact with.
  • Hard floors – Carpets and dogs do not mix well as they trap a lot of dirt from dogs. They are difficult to clean and a big source of the smell. Wooden floors or tiles are a better option if you have the choice.
