How To Calculate Dog Ages Correctly

Dog age is a tricky one! There is a common misconception that every 1 dog year is 7 human years, however this is not true…

This seems to be from a common misconception and may have gotten popular, as it is a simple calculation. 7:1 ratio is very easy to remember and loosely correlates to an average human lifespan as well at 10 years to 70 years for a human.

However the American Veterinary Medical association has broken it down as:

  • The first 15 human years equal to 1 dog year.
  • The second year is equal to 9 human years.
  • After that each year of a dog’s life is roughly 5 human years

I’m sure after that, you realise why the 7:1 ratio has become popular! Much simpler and easier to calculate and remember. No need to write down and get out the calculator!

But worry not, here is an easy to remember diagram from WebMD to calculate the age for your dog. Just work out according to size/weight of the dog:

Would be great if everyone shared how old their dogs are right now?
