The Labrador Retriever is one of the most recognized dog breeds in the world. It is extremely popular in countries like the USA and UK. In the USA it has been the number one breed for dog owners for the past 26 years.
So why is it so popular?
It is due to their versatility as they are a loving, intelligent companion and ideal family dog. While they are also able to work as a guide dog for the blind, assist the disabled, work with law enforcement and military. They are suited for so many different people, that it is no confusion as to why they are so popular.
The breed traces its origins in Newfoundland, in Canada, where the Newfoundland dogs were used as part of the fishing industry to help retrieve fishing nets, lines and other equipment. It is thought these dogs bred with hunting dogs brought over by English traders to give us this popular breed today. The Earl of Malmesbury is the one to give the breed it’s name, after they found their way over to England with traders recognizing the skills and abilities of the new breed.
They are extremely low maintenance, with most requiring just a bit of grooming once a week. They do however shed quite a bit depending on the season. But on the whole they are an easy dog to take care of and do not require a lot of effort.
They are very easy to train and therefore very useful in many different roles. The police and military have found use for them, while many people with difficulties use them to help in day-to-day chores and tasks. As they are easy to train they are great for a family pet as well, as they will be able to follow your instructions and commands with ease.
They are also known to be great for kids and therefore very popular as a family dog. They are extremely loyal, kind and compassionate dogs and one of the best friends man can have. They are extremely friendly natured, intelligent and are sure to get on with humans and other animals.
